The Story of Let's Sew
In December 2011, LaQuinta Schum transformed her passion for sewing into a fashion fabric and quilt showroom designed to fulfill the needs of the modern sewist. LaQuinta's vision began as a series of introductory and advanced sewing classes under the “Sew So Lovely” banner. When the opportunity arose to expand into more than 11,000 square feet of floor space, she seized it. In the relatively short time since, LaQuinta has worked hard to surround herself with friendly, knowledgeable people that share her vision. She's picked out a staff with a critical common interest in sewing and creating in fabric but with a stunning diversity of skill sets and specialties. She's mentored young people coming into the business and partnered with experienced veterans looking for someplace to show off their skills. She's maintained her focus on education with regular classes at all skill levels. Reaching out to others has enabled LaQuinta to offer sewing classes for beginners that teach basic skills, continuing education for intermediary students, and advanced classes that combine innovation with technique. Her guest instructors include local professionals; special events schedule international speakers for extremely limited presentations. Walk-in visitors are encouraged to stay and speak with the staff about upcoming events. With 11,000 square feet of space to fill, LaQuinta set out to stock her showroom with the best array of fabric and accessories she could find. She envisioned a floor stocked with a staggering selection of material, a place where seamstresses and tailors could touch, handle, and get a feel for the fabric they truly wanted. Her dedication to diverse inventory has filled the warehouse with a priceless catalog of vintage fashions. Thousands of other products stock the shelves, from exquisite trims to a wide selection of sewing notions. Crafts and quilts made right in the store decorate the walls. One entire wall section is dedicated to nothing but row upon row of buttons. A strategic partnership with Baby Lock has made Let's Sew the only authorized Baby Lock dealer in Evansville. Even with all these wonderful things, it's the people that have really helped LaQuinta build Let's Sew into something truly special. Old friends and new have come together to share creativity and encourage each other to pursue new projects. Let's Sew started out as LaQuinta's vision; more and more people are coming to share it. |
